Supporting Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in the situation created by COVID19
April 21, 2020
As a result of the crisis caused by COVID-19, followed by the restriction of movement, the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities are at risk of increasing poverty and receiving basic services such as education, health, information, etc. In this situation of global pandemic, these communities remain the most vulnerable group in society. The chronic poverty of these communities puts them at the forefront of marginalized groups, and failure to intervene in time during this crises of pandemic jeopardizes all the improvements that have been made so far to their position in various sectors, primarily education, health and economics, achieved over the last fifteen years with the support of the government, donors and civil society of these communities.
In response to this, KFOS has launched an emergency project aimed at supporting the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in the situation created by the pandemic, contributing to the stability of the position of these communities in Kosovo by responding to the most of their urgent needs.
The project aims at 1) ensuring the well-being of the members of the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in the situation created by the pandemic, 2) supporting the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in the field of education, respectively to help the e-learning process for children, and 3) supporting and increasing the capacity of civil society and the media of the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities, so that they can provide timely information in understandable language for their communities and are empowered to support their community in these difficult days for them. The project intervenes with undertaking of four major groups of activities: 1) Provision of food, hygiene and school packages, 2) Strengthening e-learning for children, 3) Supporting Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian media and the information of community members, and 4) Supporting the work of community-based organizations / NGOs. This emergency projekt KFOS implements through cooperating and supporting Roma, Ashkali and Egzptian communities’ organizations and media: Balkan Sunflowers Kosova, Nevo Koncepti, Bethani Chtistian Service, Roma and Ashaklai Documentation Center dhe Romtegra.
